What should I do if my child is absent?

If a students is absent from school, we ask that parents call the attendance line (480) 882-3501. This line is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. If for some reason you cannot call, you can have your child take a note to the attendance clerk immediately upon his or her return to school. However, if you know that your child is going to be absent, you should contact the attendance clerk ahead of time.

When is a student considered tardy?

Students are considered tardy when they are not in their classroom as the tardy bell rings, unless they have a pass. Repeated tardiness will result in a phone call home and/or assigned detention. Anyone coming to school later than 8:00 a.m. must check in at the office before going to class.

When are parent/teacher conferences usually held?

Parent/teacher conferences are held in October and again in March. Students are released early on those dates. However, parents can also schedule a parent/teacher conference through the school office at any point during the school year.

Is there a dress code for Harmon Elementary?

We expect all of our students to be well groomed and neatly dressed at all times. Any form of dress or hairstyle that is considered contrary to good hygiene or which is distractive or disruptive in appearance and detrimental to the purpose or conduct of the school will not be permitted. For more specific details, please refer to the student handbook.

What is required for my student to participate in extra-curricular activities?

Each students must earn a passing grade in each school subject in order to be eligible. Eligibility grading intervals are every 4½ weeks.

What if my child need medication during school hours?

Each medication is to be presented to a school representative by an adult. Parents assume full responsibility for the supply, transportation, and maintenance of prescription medication. The medication must be in the original container from the pharmacy, and the consent form for giving medication at school must be completed and signed by the parent and physician. Medication must come to the health assistant in a prescription container stating the name of the student, the name of the medication, the dosage, and the time to be given. Medicine will be administered i the presence of school personnel.

Is there a lost and found at school?

Clothing and other articles found at school will be placed in an accessible location on campus. We encourage you to label all clothing, musical instruments, and other personal items. Use a permanent black marker or something that will not easily come off. All unclaimed items are donated to charities periodically throughout the year. All textbooks and notebooks should have the student's name written on them in ink.

Is Physical Education offered at Harmon?

Yes. Students need to wear shorts, shirts, tennis shoes, and socks during physical education class. Students should not wear sandals, flip-flops, or other open-toed shoes to school on days they have P.E. If a student must be excused for medical reasons, they must present a signed note to the P.E. teacher from his or her parent/guardian. This note may excuse the student from physical activities for a period of no more than three days, longer than that requires the verification of a physician.

Does Harmon Elementary have a Student Council?

Yes, we encourage participation in Student Council! It is the governing body of the school and plans many student activities. The Student Council is an organization through which the students may express their opinions and assist in the functions of the school. The Council tries to promote leadership and initiative. A president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer of the student body are elected to carry on student activities during the school year. Grade level representatives are also elected to the Council.
